From their human, Audre: After losing our beloved Great Dane, Max, 9 years ago we wanted to find another dog to join our family. Mostly we wanted a small enough dog to be picked up (as Dan and I were getting older) and one with a beautiful, fun personality and little to no shedding. We researched several breeds and Boston Terriers seemed to fit our lifestyle and wants. I searched all over for a male Boston, and we ended up finding a breeder near Joplin who had a litter of pups. We went to their house and chose our little Beansie boy. I named him based on several “beans” sayings: “Boston baked beans”, “Jumping beans”, and the infamous “Beans, Beans the magical fruit…” as Bostons are known for their gassiness. haha. Beans was everything we could have ever hoped for. He was goofy, loving, and energetic and fit the “Boston terrier” definition to a “t”. We never thought we’d love a dog like we had Max, but Beans proved to us wrong.
We have always had 2 dogs and after a year we knew we had to find a sister for Beans. I looked for a long-time, contacting rescue organizations and looking for reputable breeders, but didn’t find any young Bostons. Finally, I saw an ad from a breeder from the boot heel of Missouri who had one puppy left. It wasn’t a girl, but a little guy with a deformity of the ear. His ear was folded over and fused together. Dan and I drove to check out the pup and found that the breeding situation was dire. There was no way we were going to leave that stocky, cute little dog there – outdoors and in a filthy pen. Dan ended up naming Gus (short for Angus) because of a family joke. Dan would tell our daughters they should name any future son, Angus. Dan, who loved Two and a Half Men, found out that the character Jake’s real first name was Angus. He had never heard a person with such a name and thought it very funny. After our daughters assured him that they would never name their future sons Angus, he took it on to name his new “son” Angus, or Gus. Gus is 6 and Beans is 7 1/2 years old. Having two male dogs has been a change for us.
The two are great buddies but also play, wrestle, and compete like rough and tumble boys. We love their passion and energy but also their snuggles and snores!
BOSTON TERRIERS WERE ORIGINALLY BRED IN BOSTON IN THE LATE 1800s BY CROSSING BULLDOGS AND WHITE ENGLISH TERRIERS. THEY ARE ONE OF THE TRULY ALL AMERICAN BREEDS, AND ARE OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE NATIONAL DOG OF THE UNITED STATES. THEY ARE KNOWN AS THE AMERICAN GENTLEMAN OF DOGS.
